I've been working on a set of head studies over the last few weeks. I thought I'd hold off on posting them until I'd got a few to post at once.

Head 1 or Bald Space Marine

Head 2. Middle aged curly haired man.

Head03. Weird chin guy.

I've recorded the sculpting process for this third guy. I'll try and upload it somewhere or other if anyone's interested.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to do a few more, but it might be a few more weeks as I'm busy at the weekends for a bit.

Thanks.

I've uploaded the sculpting session to Vimeo if anyone's interested.

I've added the turntable too, but it hasn't uploaded yet. I'll edit the url in later.

Edit- Here it is.

Thanks.

I've got another one in progress, but it's not far enough along to post yet. Been a very busy month, but I've got a few days off next week, so hopefully I'll have time for some sculpting fun. :)

Head Study 4. Cornrows.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hPYRheYY6N0/TCaRKikNoCI/AAAAAAAAARU/D-16M70Yki4/s1600/head04_stage2.jpg

He took a bit of time to get right. I kept changing his nose as it looked different in each of the reference pictures.

And the cornrows took a while too. I'm quite pleased with how they turned out though.

The reason I didn't get my fourth head study done earlier was because I was distracted into doing this monster.

He was inspired by the creature design in Guillermo del Toro's films and a bit of the soldier demons in Constantine.

Quality stuff. If I had to nitpick, and I absolutely do ;), I'd say that the hair line on the 4th study feels a little off. Feels like he has a little too much forehead to me. And Flattop needs a brain!

Anyway, nice stuff. Could totally see that monster being pushed to a full character.

Yup think you're right there Daelus2. I was too busy worrying about the detail of the hair and didn't get the shape of the top of his head right. Schoolboy error. :)

I've now brought the top of his head up a bit and smeared his hairline forward a bit and brought the middle braids forward a little more too.

I decided I needed to do some contemporary clothing practice. I wanted to do something baggy and as it happens the cornrows guy reference I used for head 4 was wearing some baggy clothes. So I've decided to make a full length version of him.

Here's stage 1. Level 3 subdivision. Just enough to define the basic folds. No seams or details yet.

thats some great work there dude, the fold looks really natural bar a few...
the couple that stick out mainly, are the long fold straight down his left leg, and the 2 horizontal folds up near the shoulders, but having said that if ur following reference n there are actually folds that do that then, awesome, i stand corrected haha..

but yeh i can't do folds like that, so ya did a damn awesome job! Good stuff.

Yeah I'm copying reference images, so any weird folds really exist. :)

I agree about the long straight one on the left leg. I wouldn't do one like that if I was trying to make something usable but it is like that. It might not be quite in that position though, so I'll take a look next time I work on it.

This one really looks good :). You got some cool stuff going, keep it up!

Thanks. It's hard to find the time at the moment though. I'll have to figure a way to do some sculpting or work towards a sculpt while commuting.

Not much more work on the clothes just yet. I wanted to bring in some hands and feet first and take them up to a basic level of work. I also had to adjust things to fit the head properly.

I'm pretty much finished with the sculpting on this guy now. I refined the pockets on the trousers, added some ring fittings. I've sculpted the shoes up and the hands and merged in the head.

I'll probably texture him.

Thanks.

Texturing might be on hold for a while. Mudbox seems to think I'm out of memory despite it only using 1.3 gig on a 3gig machine. I also had an error message creating AO telling me it wasn't supported by my graphics card even though it had just done it for another object.

I'll have to try it on my desktop. When it's not stuffed in a cupboard while the central heating is being done.

Cool great stuff here.

My mudbox is saying the same to me and i even got 8g of ddr3 ram :P hehe what a fool.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hPYRheYY6N0/THGkwIwmCYI/AAAAAAAAASk/biApWJFjyvo/s1600/cornrows_head_textured02.jpg

Since I couldn't work on the whole character at once I thought I can just work on the head and body separately and merge the texture layers when I'm done, or work on the desktop once I've got it set up again.

Anyway, here's the head. Textured mostly with projection paint. I tweaked the sculpting detail a bit after to match it.

There's a slight problem with the image based lighting making the eyes come out a bit milky as it's using the same material as the skin. I'll have to make it a different one to resolve that I think.

I rendered a turntable too, I'll upload that to Vimeo shortly.
