Like the presentation of this one, the texture has nice base colors as well. It feels like high freq detail is so extreme though to the point were it feels like the texture wasnt high res enough and was oversharpened in PS, most notably around the nostrils, eyebrow and cheek bone area. LIke hwo the skin feels down on the front of the neck and like the big nasty ridges up the nose as well. What was this rendered with? Are the light colors on the BG from the actual lights lighting the model or were those colors tweaked after the fact?

It was renderd using mental ray in max using photomettric lights and a linear colour space workflow (which I now use all the time now.) It was one of my initial sculpts done during the beta stage of mud 2009 so theres a fair bit that I'd do differently now. But yeah the 2k texture space in this one simply was not enough for it I agree. Its actually just a normal mapped version of the base mesh so it stands up ok for that, but still has its serious faults. Top marks for spotting the unsharpen mask used on the texture just before render time. ;)
Alas another one that was lost in the drive killer episode when I lost 4 1/2 terrabytes of my drives.

Thanks for the link I'l take a proper look later tongiht. I use a lot of different photometrics for various renders, if memory servers for this one it was a couple or three mr portals and I'm pretty sure a 100watt lighbulb....I came to the conclusion a while back that my renders were let down by crappy lighting, so took some time to try and learn as much as I could on the subject.
My logic was that an art gallery takes a lot of care to light and properly present painting or sculpture, so as the computer screen is our 'gallery' its a good idea to take just as much time and care in presenting it. Yet again I could be talking complete and uttter bollocks. :)
