Hello
I need some non bias advise please! I am a potential purchaser of either Zbrush or Mudbox but cannot decide. From looking at various videos, I REALLY like Mudbox for its user interface whereas zbrush looks a bit of a minefield and less intuitive. I like the look of the use of zspheres in zbrush - is there anything comparable in Mudbox or are they a gimmick and unnecessary for most modeling requirements? Another thing I like about Zbrush is the ability to pose a nearly finished model by moving the joints/masking - I have not seen anything like this in Mudbox or is there another way to change the general pose.

I see from alot of videos that many users firstly create a basic model on their main software (Maya, Max etc) and import to mudbox for detailing/finishing - is it possible to create the very detailed model from scratch in Mudbox, paint it and then export it, along with it's texture map to render the model in a scene within Cinema 4D (too many polygons??). I really don't like the idea of creating a base mesh in Cinema 4D as to me this defeats the creative process of sculpting from a ball of clay in Mudbox as you would in reality.

Many Thanks for any pointers
Blenny

One point i have to make here is that:you can bet your cotton socks that 99% of folk on here used ZB before switching to Mud. My jaw dropped when i saw Glen Southern on here.I mean he's been using ZB forever.

Not to hype up Mud,but i believe if you're just starting out in sculpting, don't put yourself through the horrors of the ZB UI/workflow.Mud is a no nonsense pure sculpting machine.

Download>install>open the app>spend an hour or 2 watching some of Waynes vids and you'll be up and running in no time.

For what its worth Zb and Mudbox are much of a muchness from my own experience (admittedly not much).

ZB's UI isn't the friendliest and if you're looking at Mudbox and liking the interface that should count for a lot IMHO... You don't want to be fighting the application as well as your own learning curve...

Why don't you download a trial of Mudbox and Zbrush and see how you get on... But for my money Mudbox seems more sensible.

As a close mate of Glens I should point out that he uses both applications along with many others. Like myself there isn't a sculpting app that he hasn't used at one time or another.

There's about 6-8 hours of vids out there so far between the QuickStart and ground up series (not counting the ground up vids not out yet ;) ) so there a fair old whack to go through. So I'd say take alook at the quickstart to get an idea of some of the stuff that peolpe dont usually think mudbox can do, and teh ground up to actually learn the software from the ground up.

I freely admit that since opening this site, I'm no longer impartial...although I have used both apps in depth and am (with out sounding big headed) a recognised expert in both...but I urge you to take NO ONES word for anything with either app in regards to which is best....make up your own mind and not be swayed by opinions of anyone, myself included.

Just remember that its software and not a religion lol. :)
