I've had a few guys mentioning they use windows 7 and have experienced no issues and a bit ofa performance gain. Athough bare in mind its a pretty small number of people. It can't be much worse than vista...I'm suffering from white screens of death all over the damn place from driver crashes in multiple apps.

Is it true that they have reduced things a bit in the new OS? Less extravagant flashy stuff and more capabilities? More Linux like...

Windows 7 has been very stable so far (and it's still in beta), I have been running it on my workstation and laptop since they released it several months ago. The laptop is on 32 bit and has never crashed or bsod on me, the workstation gets a nvidia display driver crash once in a while, and maybe 1 or 2 bsod since I have installed it. Trying to find the best maya/mudbox drivers can be a little bit of a pain, but overall it's more stable than vista and much faster (even during beta). I ended up using the certified quadro drivers, and they seem to be the best for both programs. really my main issue is with Vista/Windows 7 getting a display driver crash, making it unable to save in the applications that are open (mudbox, maya are the only applications that cause this problem). Other than that it is more "flashy", but at the same time a much more useful UI, I would even say it's better than that of OS X at window management, multitasking and cleanlyness. Linux based OS's have always been very fancy actually, abilities to do transparency window effects, with tons of custom UI configurations. Fidora, Ubuntu ect all have very in-depth customizable and flashy UI tools, that which windows 7 isn't even close at this point (neither is OS X). I do enjoy the simplicity and style of windows 7, I think it is very aesthetically pleasing while maintaining the minimalist appeal.

so i installed the beta yesterday. interface is great, lots of cool enhancements, unfortunately, I had to go back to vista. I had this strange bug with maya. most likely my graphics card. basically, the marking menus in maya had a slight delay. so I'd right click, and flick my wrist to gesture to verts for example and it would cause the mouse pointer to basically freeze for a second and then it wouldn't actually hit the item i was going for..nothing would happen. so in order for them to work I'd have to slow down the whole process by right clicking the mouse, wait for the menu to pop up and then slide over to my selection. now that doesn't sound so bad, but I'm so used to my custom menus that I know exactly where everything is. So the bug basically takes away the speed and gestural nature of the marking menus. bummer! i was loving the new taskbar. guess i'll wait until the release canidate.
also, I play a good amount of call of duty 5 and punkbuster won't work on windows 7, everytime i join a multiplayer game i get booted out of the game..sux.
