I did this one a few weeks back and wasn't happy with the fubar neck / shoulder area so I'm going to tidy this one up and finish it off as a untextured bust. The ears are not finished in case your wondering....

Rather cool wayne... really like the eyes and mouth... and the middle of the neck. That lighting setup does show this sort of untextured model of nicely :)

Just me or does the area between neck throat and breast seem so like your blue alien sculpts?
I like the eyes and the saggy look of the chin :)

Yeah I used a sort of sculpting short hand to remind me to redo the area, but never did and just about dumped it a week or so back. I didn't have any itention of going back to it really. but thought hey what the hell, its about time I did another wrinkley old coffin dodger. lol
So I'm goig back over that area again fro scratch and trying to get that nailed. (Although finding good old blokes neck and chest refs is not easy I've found.... I was even tossing around the idea of organising an over 70's strip event at the local old peoples home to find some lollol :D :D)

I see chromatic abboration :)
Are you using the special stencil u made for wrinkles for this?

Guilty as charged I thought I'd add it in for a laugh. :)

Nope... all hand sculpted and videoed. For stuff like this one stencils rarely give the right results.... sculptig them n by hand gives more flexability.

It's better now :).
When doing old people, try to think of that all muscles (if torn and really old) and skin goes downwards and inwards. Muscles are very scarce and if accounted for, then they are small and very stretched.
So no beefy neck areas and such ;P. Necks might be shortened too.

Wayne's Absolute Golden Rule #1
NEVER use a 3d work as a reference no matter how good (yep not even antropus's great work). The reason is that the moment an artist takes a real life refernce and turns it into art something is inevitaby lost along the way and the artists own interpretation added. So by using a existing sculpt a your ref you are basicaly using a 2nd generation reference.
If you use existing work as your refs you also run the risk of a slight exageration each time its interpreted, so what looks 'great' can actually be quite far for reality. Thats why I never use 3d work or exsiting art, only photos or real life model as refs. :)

Put it this way...think of the best 10 digital sculpts you've ever seen, and I bet you that at least 9 of them were used using real world refs and not 3d renders of others work .;)

But Wayne. I checked a lot of real references and this one was quite exact. And what I meant with it was that you could see how saggy everything was, you know...
Edit: thanks for the tip ;)

Closer I think... I've finally found some decent real life refs thanks to a couple of trad sculptors. So blending from a couple of ref images.

Awesome work Wayne. I really like all the attention to detail. All the wrinkles and creases are very well done. The asym adds another level of life and realism, i dig it. I didn't see you ask for comments so please forgive if I have overstepped my bounds. I only noticed one thing that could be a tad off. The nostril seems to fall off into face as apposed to curving up and into the nose. From the front it looks great, but from the side (to me) it really stands out. Heres a pic to illustrate what I mean. http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/7965/nose.jpg
cant wait to see this guy all finished up.. I know you said you aren't planning on texturing him, but i think it would turn out really well. You should think about it

You kow I just spotted that today myself ! I'm assuming that some of that (but not all) was due to a last minute nose shape change with the Grab brush. I'll go and sort that out now. as I'm at a spare end. But no crits are encouraged here on anyones work. I LOVE a detailed constructive crit as thats the only way art grows and improves. What i hate with passion normly reserved for warring nations, are vauge or generalised crits. Those are as much use as a chocolate tea cosey.
No one in art is above critisism.

PS if I get bored I may texture him at some future point.

Looking nice wayne, love the main body of the face, something about the ears bugs me a little... I look at the nose and expect the ear to be different... either fleshier on the top edge... or the lobes hanging a bit more or something... but im probably wrong hahaha, its gut instinct not logic hehe.

Nope your not wrong the ears are fubar..... I wasn't overly worried in this case as the ears aren't seen too much from the angle of the camera. But yeah I really should sort them out.

Above the nosewings. Check the bulgy area, needs some flattening or smoothing. Cause right now it's standing out a lot (literary)
