Hello everyone!
I made a quick box in Mudbox, it's much faster, than in XSI, but I can't get the same crisp result in renders and basicly I can't reproduce the same quality with 32 displacement map. Maybe I shouldn't use it for that task? I tried Normal map, the result is somewhat better, but no depth at all, so I stick with displacement... I tweak all the settings, but couldn't get enough close result, as a original mudbox model... So in that screen shot I described the problems and included the settings... So the idea is to get crisp edges of the box with good depth of folds... If I increase depth, the edges become bulky and otherwise - no depth, good enough edges... Any help will be appreciated a lot.
Thank you.

My familiarity w/ xsi is null, so I'm not terribly sure of what i'm looking at.

Is the -.25 and .25 the output levels for the displacement map in xsi? Reason I ask is b/c the maps output settings in your render app. is the first thing that comes to mind when I try to thing what the problem might be.

In max you have to enable color mapping and set it to -1,1, default being 0,1.

Have you tried following the steps shown in the 32 bit displacement in XSI quickstart video? Its available in the menu to the left among the quickstart videos.

spindraft, I used best guess setting in mudbox when generated 32 bit displacement... And as I understood correctly, for the 32 bit you don't need actually that range, because it's like hdri image... So I used default settings for 32 bit displacement, as I saw in tutorial by Wayne Robson (actually he just pointed it here), but no luck...

Wayne, yeah. I did it by your tutorial, but for new range start 0 and new range end 1 settings i got blury not good results, so in my case those settings don't working well... Don't know why...

My best guess (I can't test this out as I'm in the middle of a mega render right now), is that the areas in question are not getting tesselated enough at render time for the displacement to take full effect. Things such as this can be quite troublesome to use displacement for as the settings needed to get them looking 'right' are more often then enough ones that will send your render times through the roof.

I'd say take the settings finer to see if you get any improvement...but do it slowly in steps.

Wayne, thanks for the answer!
I tried to move slowly sliders for old start/end range and that helped me a lot. I never touched them because was not very sure the purpose of them, but i tweaked them a little, and my edges became much cleaner and crisper without downing the length and changing recursive steps. So i tried to find good balance in render speed. The result is not perfect and not very close to the original mudbox model, but still decent. And yeah thanks to point about adjusting slowly, it's the main factor.
