ive been through quite a few tutorials, but not really started doing any major modelling yet. The thing Is that I cant figure out the best way to make UV's in maya for the exported object, does it need to just be a quick auto map or does the map need to be exact.

Also not quite sure about the best way to get the maps in to maya.

Sorry if I'm a bit of a noob but seem to take a long time to learn all the aspects of a program and the best way of doing it.

Mudbox look like a great program and cant wait to get some work done on it.

You should use an unwrap program. Like roadkill or UVlayout.
If you want maximum quality from the texture you need to make sure the UVs are all set properly without unnecesary overlapping.Make sure the UV space is so that where you need details they cover a lot of space to get finer details...

If you don't want to make any texturing I don't think you need a very good layout, though it might cause you troubles.

Hope it answered your question.
