Yes thats straight out of mud, I may do a few tests with the tilebale texture set tonight and see how it behaves across larger geometry. The poly count was pretty low really, although once its tiled it should help to diguise any brush marks etc...

Quickly threw it on some basic geo to see how it tiles.... (Normal mapped instead of displacement mapped)

I would absolutely love to see a tutorial on how to get a tileable brick wall set from Mudbox 2009. Either that or any tips at all, or if someone could point me in the right direction to one, it'd be rad. Thanks!

Maps used were diffuse and spec, threw some viewport AO on it and DOF.

Just a few bits and pieces thrown together...as I say there's about 0% skill involved but it struck me as a cool effect for lace and widdly cloth etc...the spec and ao play a massive part in making it look halfway decent though. So drag out those old net curtains of your grannnies and any womans underwear and night dresses you can get your hands on...just dont expect anyone to belive you only want it to sculpt with lol. I fancied ater sorting out pointpushers currupt file doing a sculpt from a 9 x2 x 2 box as he did as its not base shape I'd used before. Maybe he'll end up as a test run for a goul type characture at some future point. I've always had a soft spot for characatures.

One of a few troll type designs I'm messsing around with for at some point in the future. Still rough and now happy with the hands on this version.
Yes the knee are supposed to lead stight into the feet and the lower arms are supposed to be far larger and out of proportion than usual lol.

I like the style of his proportions, but some areas I look at, I wonder if they'd still look cool deforming. Such as the knee to foot area. The lack of a shin has me wondering if that area would look a mess and stretched all out of wack if he were to be rigged and animated.

yeah I agree totally...as it stands its no use for animtion at all. Its a shame as I do love that knee straight into foot look....but there are simply too many problems to make it a viable idea. I've done about 4 revisions of this one up till this point and this is one model thats fighting me every step of the way. Revision 5 wil be next unless I dump it as a bad idea to start with lol.

Interesting Vid Wayne - anything that simpllifies anatomy is welcome lol Ive been doing CG a long while but anatomy is one of my bad points so any starting poitns like this are sweeet ;)
When people ask you about anatomy reference, where (site book etc) do you guide them to? ie to learn enough to produce characters to this level but without going into mental doctor detail. I know there are some more focused books, just wondered if one in particular stands out to you.
Oscar
03-20-2009, 07:44 AM
this is great...funny thing is that U call this 15min quick sculpt when it would take me like...4hours to get ten times worse effect :/ anyways, i tried to use reference but the best way to learn all the muscle groups etc. was to watch other people vids on Youtube and trying to follow their moves...not the best way, i know, but still it gave some results, so be sure to see sth like Your model from me :) just to check if i can follow :) nice that U always show subdivision levels, what was the polycount on the highest res? and another question, after U do a base mesh, do U unwrap it in max or just take it straight to max? i found couple of times that it was impossible to sculpt a base mesh if it wasn't fully unwraped...even box mapping would do but without that it always slows down radicaly... thx again for the tip Wayne, hope to see more from You :)
Wayne
03-20-2009, 08:32 AM
The polycount on that one was 1.5 mill, and yeah I usually throw on a very quick set of uv's using Headus UVlayout. (...and I do mean a quck set lol. ) I'll keeping refining this particular family of bases as they along with the workflow I've had in mind speed things up a lot. Doing different parts of the body in iolation is probably the best way to lern human anaotmy. New users often feel overfaced if asked to do a full anatomy or escorche sculpt. As the battle with your own self doubt is without the biggest one it helps a lot as a result.
I had to do an escorche a month of two back and those still scare the shit out of me lol.

i was thinking, there was once on the other forum sort of a class for people. One guy, that would be U wayne, took people through the whole model doing one part a week. This looke sort of like this, the guy made a wideo, or regular tutorial with pics showing one part of the car, telling what techniques and so on, and then people who wanted to participate followed the tutorial during whole week, and than another part so that in the end they could've put togather whole car. Long process, yet when it comes to anatomy, i think that could work, for instance torso one week, hand another, then legs and head... what U think about this? i know that there's new member in Your family and U propably don't have time to do it now but maybe in the future:) If U would start this one, count me in for the class :)

Its a good idea but at the moment time is at a premium with my dughter just being born on sunday morning. Added to which its a lot of long term work that can prove hard to coordinate correctly. But I'll keep it to one side for some point in the future all going well. Although I've also got to keep some stuff for the masterclasses and book I'm doing on mud so I can't give everything away for free. :)

I understand, hope that U'll find time someday for that :) I have no chances to participate in master class since none of them are in Poland..i think. It doesn't have to be much...just post sth with some advices and let us follow :) I think that if some, let's say 10 people participated, than we could comment and advice each other or if noone has any idea how to get some effect than U could help... It's not like i want to steal Your talent or get everything for free (btw. will U ship that book to Poland?) it would be more like all in one place stuff... I'm just thinking loud :)

Your very good and quick when it comes to free styling... how do you cope with a tighter breif... or trying to recreate something that already exists... say if you were asked to Tom Cruise etc?.... would you start loading image planes etc... or just feel your way with it?
Wayne
04-08-2009, 10:42 AM
Doing a model of something 'real' that exists is a different discipline really. I did a load of characters for a planned CGI remake of some lost 1960's doctor who episodes last year (that got canned due to the recession sadly). Mostly its examining in detail as many refs as you can and geting a feel for that you are about to sculpt before you make one brush stroke.
A case in point is a sculpt of the '2nd doctor' Patrick Troughton I started to redo a few weeks back. (I didn't post it outside of docotor who sites as no one would have an idea of who the hell he is lol.) The easiest way to approach a likeness (I learned this from a guy who did caracitures)) is to get the upper eye lids and brows first then nose , everything else falls into place after that and its a matter of just refining everything.
I dont find real life stuff as good to relax with as a rule lol....the prep takes a fair while for it and with 2 kids that valuable time. ;) Hey flue or not I still need to keep my hand and eye in. ;)

Appreciate the follow up wayne, ta.
It would be good to the Dr Who model if it can be posted ... understand if ya cant tho ;) Your right, I dont know the bloke that well but a quick google reminds me of an episode repeat from years back I think.
Quick additional question, say for the model of Patrick, did you start with a more detailed base mesh in max etc first? did u use image planes for that?
Accurate stuff as you say isnt very relaxing... hence my intrest really... ive never ever freestyled... quite refreshing to see it done.
Hope the Flu goes soon... My GF had it and it nacked her for about 4 days :(

Sorry no can do as they are still under NDA although after the project was cancelled due to the recession the chances are no bugger will see them anyway. Which pisses me off a wee bit as there was 3 months of work on all the characters for a complete episode. Of cxourse I could redo one of the main characters as a personal project at a later date and that is not covered by the NDA. ;)
Quick additional question, say for the model of Patrick, did you start with a more detailed base mesh in max etc first? did u use image planes for that?
That one wan't one of my best likeneses (and for the zb DVD we had to change it over further away so I wouldn't get sued to shit lol), but I used some background planes on a 2nd monitor and eyeballed it. Although things such as a grid overlay for the ref images can help a LOT.
In a similar way the caricature I did for the actor Danny John Jules a month bcak was treated in a similar way...although in that case it was from a crazy low base mesh (about 80 polys). It was simply a matter of nailing the eyes and nose 1st...other stuf falls into place afterwards. But that is the hardest part...getting that upper eyelid and browline perfect enough to not only look right but capture the 'persona' as well as what they look like.
Hope that helps.

vimeo is better quality but youtube has more people and larger catchment area..so its swings and roundabout really....
Nice to see the base mesh..
I'll do better than that I'll upload it... but I warn you its not a lot of use to most people though as its only 76 polys and has no uv's. (The reason I use very low poly bases for doodles is that I can make massive changes far easier than a higher polycount model....speeeds things up and allows me more fredom.)

Im waiting for you to get it down to about 10mins a head lol ;)
Generic type of stuff I've done in about 15 mins... but certainly wouldn't win any awards for orginality in that time. I've been close a few times although go too fast and smoke seems to come from the nvidia graphics drivers and instant white screen crash lol. One day I'll 'take the breaks off' and see exactly how fast I can knock something out.... Although with my track record that's going to probaby piss off a few people. It does seem the faster I work the more emails I get telling me that I should slow down as they are getting heat from their bosses lol.
But to reiterate for the 900th time I work fast for a few reasons, a- because I can, b - because I can get the picture in my head down faster before it fades and c - as its fun and a good way to relax and stay sharp at the same time. Its also a nice flip side to the complex far longer time frame model that I've been working on of late for the book main project.

Usually a very tall flat one for blocking out, very sharp one for fine cutting in and the low wide one at times for bulking up..... But next time I do one I'll be sure to make the curves panel visible, although alot of it will depend on if you are heavy handed or light handed.
