I started a new project which is a simple treasure chest. I set up a blog for those who can help me with the issues that I am having. The quick and ugly version is this: .tif files won't render in mental ray, I am getting opacity issues with the model and the maps, and I might have UV issues that might be hurting me at render. I have everything set up in my blog with images. If anyone can help me, I will forever be in your debt.

In response to the error message you're getting. Mudbox saves tifs with compression and I understand Maya doesn't support that. So you'll have to load the file up in Photoshop and resave it without compression.
That might be a good start, but might not be the issue.

Thanks. I did the environment variable to set up no compression, but it didn't work. So, I manually did it in Photoshop, I just re-saved the .tif with no compression. Now I don't get any errors, but no displacement shows up. I did the texture just like I seen in the tutorials. So I don't know what else it could be.

Have you tried using OpenEXR instead? I always prefer it for displacement.

Thanks Wayne. Now, I tried the openexr....i still get nothing in the render window. I have the shader network setup like in the tutorials. I did the approximation editor, I have the file attached to it, but still get nothing.

Glad you got it sorted.
Would you mind sharing what you did to fix it? Might save someone else having the same problem.

Now, if you can get Mbx 2010, Wayne's plug-in ought to work to solve any Mbx-Maya transfer issues, or at least most of them.
