Hello there. So i basically did a sculpt in mudbox and when i was done i exported a mid-res obj and started my work in topogun retopologizing. When i had half of my scorpion ready and polished i exported it to 3dmax to do the symmetry, the welding and the uvws. So i ironed out a part of my models uvw and tought "lets export already so i can check how the normals are doin". great horror! both mudbox and topogun crash upon loading my obj. in fact, Topogun even displays my highpoly reference a second before crashing, which means he just cant figure out something in the obj. Is there any known flay for obj exporting? I used the custom mudbox settings, removing materials smoothing and useless stuff.
I am going to post this exact same thread to the mudboxhub, even if it might be more of a 3dmax-related kind of post.

Take a look at my attached image, these are the settings I use for OBJ exporting and generally always work fine. That's using Max2009, but if you need a screengrab of my 2010 settings let me know.
Also if this dosn't fix your issue post some good images of your unwrap/wires, it's possible the issue resides there.

I think i worked it out.. had uverlapping UVWs due to 3dmax acting silly upon import.. he basically creates extra faces inside a 4edge ring... i did not notice those faces in the beginning, only pelt acting strange and i tought well im gonna do that manually but then i saw them and detached them from the rest of the UVWs... pisses me off since i was trying to keep a very low polycount and now i have this crap in there and my UVWs already done and all.. ill try to cut them out but not sure its possible. Thanks for the help, that screenshot will most likely prove useful!

No problem, glad you figured out the issue, those darn overlapping uvw's can be a pain :)

great, now mudbox crashes when trying to generate the normal maps.. "subdividing 75%" says the status bar and there it stays. Ever had that problem?

Not really, I don't remember crashing when generating maps...
could still be something odd with the model or the uvw's as those two things tend to be the big culprits for crashes. Check and make sure you have all verts welded, no duplicate faces, normals facing the right way, have a nice border around your meshes on the uvw's, etc?

That can happen when the UVs touch or overlap the edge of the 0-1 UV space, so I'd make sure they're well within the 0-1 area with a good border space all the way round.
