The eventual aim of this is to have a full scene of a alien in an old tomb...still very early days and still workig out whats going to go where.

Quick colour test taken from a animation I did for shits and giggles last night. The colours are simple solid block at this stage until I finalise a scheme. Maybe reminds me a bit to much of marcus from underworld for some reason.

I really like the second image.
does this mean we will get to see an animation of this character :)

Consider that a yes then lol....
Its something I've called a 'speed pipeline' (where the idea is to take an asset form start to a rigged / skinned and animated character in a short length of time.) In this case it took only an hour working time from start to being ready to render it out as its a simple rig and plus I'm not the world best animator ,lol.
I'll do a proper texture set for him now and then re-render out the animation with some decent lights and shaders as right now theres just a diffuse and normal map and a 3 point light setup. It also acted as a sort of test of setting up a simple posing rig for mudbox users (which gives the plus point of then being able to weight the rig correctly etc....later on ). Sure, its not going to win any awards, but for a single hours top to bottom time it aint too bad I think. ;)

The animation is excellent
I was hopeing his mouth would open at some point but I am guessing only the lips were modeled :)

A tut may actually take a helluva lot of time to explain fully for it as I was working at one helluva lick for the rigging and skinning etc... If there's space maybe something similar will make its way into the mud book as an extra chapter at the end. But yes thats just the mud default head so the mouth couldn't be opened although I did want to at one point. I would also have gotten some better deformations with a good topology mesh. But as a posing rig its easy and fast to set up.
The rig was a few morph shapes (blend shapes for maya guys) and a very simple fast to set up bone rig.

I'll be doing a proper texture set and then re-rendering..I'm almost tempted to retop it and add some open mouth stuff to the animation...but times a premium right now. I may be doing a fair few of these soon as my son is going through astage (3 3/4 years old) where he loves seeing models animated lol. If it keeps him happy I dont mind knocking them out form time to time for him. Although he does seem to think that all dad's make 'wiggly headed blue monsters' for their kids lol.

Updated with a few better textures, turns out that it looks far better without a spec map, so haven't bothered.

Dude! Amazing. Did you rig it in Maya using the 'morph shapes' as you called them (blend shapes i'm aware of...morph shapes...dunno).
I would definitely like to see a tutorial on this, or a method!

Morph targets are just max's exquivelant of blend shapes in maya. I'm lucky enough to use al 3 main apps (maya, max and xsi) and chop and change betwen them as I feel like it. Its a pretty simple workflow but an absolute pain in teh arse to describe. A video may over run considerbly as it would take far longer than the 1 hour taken to explain why everything is being done. But I am planning on having something very similar as a short section in the mudbox book I'm working on.
But basicaly its is a simple bone rig with about 3 moprphs / blend shapes.....

Yeah I like it also... I would say check the specularity... there are some really strange looking areas on the neck. And the skinning or the Morphs on the neck I would affect more skin to stretch and morph...

Yes but remember that the whole thing was done from blank viewport, sculpted right through to animation in 1 hour lol. So there wasn't a lot of time to tweak anything.
