I would very much like to work at a higher res and add in more detail but my comp gets bogged down at 512,512 polys. My comp is 6 years old and a single core so this is the highest detail I can accomplish. I am waiting for windows 7 before purchasing a new comp at which time I will get the latest and greatest version of mudbox.

OK I'll tell you a story you may find interesting....
Back when mud v1 very 1st came out I was using what was even then an ancient computer (a duron 800 wiht 512 mb of single channel ram lol). It was all I could afford at the time as it had only been a short time since I'd fought my way back on my feet after being homeless and living on the streets. Its all I had and could afford (and even that was a gift from a friend) so I had to make do.
It made me work smarter and find interesting ways around the lack of polys, it forced me to find a solution to problems each tme tjhey arose and as a result put more work into form and 'fooling the eye' into thikning there was far more detail than there was. Tricks I still use today such as usig larger brush sizes with a lighter touch for cleaner lines.... I could probably write a book on the tricks I learned back then for working at less than 1/2 million polys.
So once the time came and I could afford a new computer (about 1 week before I recorded Mudbox a practical guide for Kurv...still dont see a penny from that one so dont buy it lol.), it was like a bomb going off, suddenly I could add the detail ontop of the way I had learned to sculpt and things took off from there.
Sculpting at 1/2 million polys or lower isn't easy and certainly isn't going to make people say wordds like 'leet' and 'dude its amazing' but you will learn faster and probably better than if you were throwing polys at something like they were going out of style. So take heart that you learning a lot from sculpting at low levels. Its how I started and ended up giving me many skils that are now a core part of the way I work. Your post reminds me of myself a few years back, and I know you'll do well. (Call it a hunch ;) )
So good work. :) So dont get disheartened or give up...just keep going.
Good Luck

Some more quick sculpts. None of them taking more then an hour to an hour and a half. The whole point was just to test different styles or studies.

A sculpt a day keeps the boredom away. The whole sculpt took about an hour and a half to lay out and the goal was just to add feline features to the bust.

That last one has some great possibilities for extending to a full creature. ;)
