i've got an nvidia gtx280 with the latest driver set, 182.06 . in one hour of sculpting i had this problem 3 times. i'll be sculpting, then my screen flickers for second, it comes back and the mudbox viewport is black. a box pops up in my system tray saying my video card driver stopped responding, but then it recovered. mudbox is shot though and i can't save, i have to kill the process. i'm using vista ultimate 64
anyone else ever get this problem? is there a setting in the nvidia control panel i don't have set properly?

Vista is an absolute bastard for doing this, usually locking mud in the process. This appears to be microsofts idea of a feature to save the system from getting unstable. Hopefuly theres a way to turn it off like UAC. Some drivers seem more prone to it than others though.

This is definitely one of the many issues of using Vista, unfortunately (windoze 7 couldn't ship soon-enough!)
This also does not seem to be specific to a single make and/or model of graphics card. There have been some attempts by microsoft of fix this, but I'm still seeing this problem in many software packages (maya, mudbox).
Sorry I can't lend any help, but so far, I haven't found a solution that works.

I have been using mud on win 7 for a while now and the latest drivers for my FX card caused this to happen all the time. I reverted to the Autodesk certified driver and the problem has stopped. I blame this problem on nvidia more than vista/7. Try different drivers is all you can do unfortunately. But the problem needs to be fixed by someone very soon. I wish mud would write out a temp file when it crashes :P
I should note that this issue happens with multiple programs, not just mudbox.

had this same thing happen - strangly was working for hours with the wacom locked on to a single screen and didnt get the problem, then started doing something with the mouse when it happened, not sure what i was doing, draggin or something and my cursor moved on to my second monitor... then it went bang? so perhaps a multiple screen issue. Will see if it happens again i guess.

SNAP! :-)
I have been having the same problem.
I sent a bug report to Autodesk about it last week.
I am using the same video card (GTX280) with latest drivers and Vista Ultimate 64.
I am also doing a lot of texturing with my Wacom when the error occurs.

I've noticed that the gtx280 drivers do seem to have a few problems with mud from what I've noticed from users etc... Luckily I've got an ace contact at nvidia as well so I'll see if there are any driver fixes planned...

Has anyone else with a GTX 280 had problems with using Lit Sphere Materials?
Mudbox slows down for me and I can see banding and artifacts on the material that should not be there.
I also get weird wire frame displays at higher sub division levels.

Yay Tetris ;P
I have the same problem in vista x64 sp2 and I found only one workaround, so before to bring a model into mudbox, you need to scale it 4 times at least... But still in paint mode I can't work more than 10 minutes... It's so frustrating, maybe someone found new workarounds? I heard turining off physX support can help too, but not in my case.
