I had a little down time at work this morning so I thought I would install the 2010 demo and take it for a spin. I kind of like the direction this is going so I may take it further with some detailing an texturing. I probably spent just over 90 mins so far on this (does that count as speed) using the base head mudbox supplies.

and a texture pass I did this afternoon I would have liked to push it further but my work PC it too slow especially when trying to use the dry brush and paint gloss and specular maps

hey nice work dude, especially like the mouth area, looks like his mouth could open up into four different pieces.

beelzeboss
11-04-2009, 10:52 PM
Thanks

The idea of the mouth is the upper lip splits into 4 and the jaw into 2. If I don't have much work on tomorrow I am going to go back and tighten up some of the sculpted details and tweak the textures. I may even try and get it into Vray to do some renders.

Really like the sculpt - not so sure the texture works quite as well as it could... but i like what you have going... keep the renders coming ;)

Thanks I totally agree about the textures. My machine at work was having a hard time with multiple layers in mudbox. I have collapsed it down and it is making the texturing a bit easier. I am going to have a play around this it a bit more when I get free time to see if I can get something which will compliment the character a bit more.

just a small update it is an improvement but still requires work I may have to install the 2010 demo at home and finish it there.

yeh im liking this verison better, tho it kinda looks blur'y in some places of your image..? could just be my eyes, but i also think u should mess up the skin a little, with more rinkles and some kind of texture on the skin... ( not speaking of colour texture ), no skin is completely smooth..
just my little opinion.

11-06-2009, 04:00 PM
thanks for the comments I have done some more work on it there are still a number of areas I want to tighten up I also want to pull out some of the details a little bit more in places. I can also see the UV seams creeping in there now so I will have to address that as well.
Not really a speed sculpt anymore but nevermind.
I also discovered you can do larger captures through mudbox yay no more printscreen. Its amazing how you can overlook these things.

Thanks for the comments.

Once I am happy with it I will see about adding some sort of background.
I have tightened up a few areas done various detail tweaks and some more modifications to the textures.

thanks I had a bit of free time this morning so I gave the textures and material a bit more attention and changed the lighting from the previous one.

Maybe a bit more variety in the spec / gloss would really help it pop..also think about some fine understated bump map work. It slooking very nice so far...see how far you can push it. ;)

Thanks for the tips Wayne.
I keep chipping away at it whenever I get a bit of free time.
I have done a new more updates and dropped in an image of Orions nebula I grabbed from google just to stick a background on so I am not constantly looking at it on a flat background.

yeah... I really like this dude!!... I thought that there was a pyramid in the distance... maybe that would be a cool idea!!... considering that the 3 major pyramids in Giza are thought to reflect the stars in Orion's belt!!

Keep the updates coming man!

Aye mate looks nice - only real thing that bothers me is the eyes... the catch light doesnt look quite right to me and having it just in one eye draws you to it sorta thing.

looks good tho mate... should be chuffed with it

Well new week so I thought new sculpt. May as well turn this into a sketchbook thread.
I didn't get a great deal of free time today so I have mostly been just roughing it out while I decide what direction to take it. I am thinking of some sort of Demon anyway.

Gr8 effort mate - anything in particular inspire this? I quite like the idea that his head would have restricted movement with horns banging into each other, The large front head mass reminds me of another lads sculpt on here.. i forget who it was now tho gah... your gettin good at this ;).. keep the updates coming.

beelzeboss
11-10-2009, 01:05 AM
Thanks. I had nothing in mind when I started I just went at the base head with the grab tool making extreme changes until I saw something I liked it went through a lot of changes before I had something I liked.
The head plate was partly inspired by the angel of death from Hellboy II I didn't want it quite as elaborate or extreme as that just something that wouldn't look too far out of place as an armoured helmet/head dress

very nice work so far BL!... I can see the underlying bone structure on this guy very well... but I think there's something that needs to be done with those horns... maybe make them smaller... at least some of them...

Thanks for showing us man.

yeh looking really nice man, but i have to agree with polybuilder on the horn size, if it was mine, i would cut the shoulder horns down by 2/3'rds, cheek horns by about half, and perhaps have one broken..? and a little more a-symetry through out the model, but they're just my opinions, the whole thing is looking great mate. keep it up!

steelsky
11-11-2009, 01:35 PM
This is looking really nice mate... big step from your other model.. good job!... the others suggestions on the horns are valid... but i must admit i love the presentation of the horns when looking front on.

beelzeboss
11-11-2009, 02:38 PM
Thanks for the comments guys the horns are pretty much just placeholder while I worked out the head. I will hopefully be get some time today to work out how they are going to look and what type of horn they will be

Quick horn test over lunch just playing with shapes and textures. I am also loving the non-photorealistic filter in 2010 I am almost tempted to update my license just for that.

Thanks again.

I thought I would try something different today and do a celebrity likeness. This is something I have never been able to get right so I am going to try a different approach and see if it makes things any easier.

I am working up the forms without the main features I am hoping this approach is going to prevent me from getting too caught up in the details and constantly shifting and breaking things and allow me to get the overall head shape and muscle structure in place.
I am still in early stages with this eventually I hope it will get to the stage where people know who it is without the mouth and eyes. I will know I am on the right track then.

I haven't had much time to work on this recently a combination of modern warfare, work and being struck down by illness. But I managed to do a little more work on it today. It still needs a lot more work doing on it.
Nobody has guessed right yet but hopefully the likeness will at least start to come through over the next few updates.

Thanks the likeness is not quite there yet I can see it in places.
It is such a pain trying to get it recognisable you make one small change and it throws everything else off. I will have to just keep chipping away at it.

beelzeboss
12-02-2009, 06:30 AM
Ok I had a good few hours to put in on this today and went back to the basics and reworked it all. It is starting to look more like a human now I have to stop working while I am exhausted I just produce crap. I think I may add some hair tomorrow which may help with the likeness and help me spot the problem areas.

309

beelzeboss

more refinement to the forms it seems to be getting closer now although I will look at it again tomorrow with fresh eyes. I have dropped in a couple of sculpting layers in so I can start to add some details and get rid of some of the symmetry.

Bruce Willis?

beelzeboss
12-04-2009, 04:28 PM
heh heh. No it is not Bruce Willis I really need to add some hair to this. I am not sure how well known the actor is. I have only seen him in a few things so I guess it will depend on whether you have seen something with him in as too whether you are going to get it or not

steelsky
12-04-2009, 05:03 PM
Something in an earlier image reminds me of Dinozzo from NCIS... but thats probably just me haha.. get some hair on it!!

beelzeboss
12-05-2009, 07:18 AM
well I roughed in a foundation for the hair and did some minor tweaking to the face.
Now the hair is on it should help me in getting the face closer. I should of done this sooner really.
Doing a likeness is fun but really frustrating I won't be in a hurry to do another Although I have to admit is has give me a better understanding of what is going on in the face.

322

RobinB

I think the proportions might be a little bit off. He has quite a broad face, but it's looking a little narrow in your shots. The plane of his features is looking too narrow which is making the sides of his face angle in too much I think. That results in his mouth looking too narrow and maybe his eyes too close together. Also I'm not sure he has that much of a chin cleft from looking at his IMDB shots.

This sort of thing is a problem I've had in the past, but usually the other way round, so I may be over compensating like that.

You've got his crazy low eyebrows though. :) Keep it up.

beelzeboss
12-06-2009, 09:47 PM
Thanks Robin I have made some more adjustments based on your suggestions. I pulled out the jaws so it is a little more square at the back and flushed out the cheeks a little more which gives the head the width it was missing. The eyes I have made a little wider by pulling the inner side close to the nose and pulled out the mouth a touch as well as some other modifications around the brow. Currently the chin and the are around that is a little off (maybe a bit wide) but if you cover that up the rest is getting much closer.

I will do a bit more later once I have rested my eyes a bit so I can actually see where the adjustments are needed :)

last update for today. Still a few changes need making the mouth needs more work. it needs to be slightly lower and the lower lip a little thicker as well as some tweaking of the forms around it. The centre of the brow needs to be a touch lower as well and the jaw needs bringing in slightly and the overall shape tweaking a touch.

haha yeah i can the likeness now... gr8 effort.. how far you gonna take it?.,.. full texture etc?

beelzeboss
12-07-2009, 04:36 PM
I won't be going full texture I just want to get the sculpt as close as I can. I could probably texture it now and it would look right but I know for a fact there are still issues I need to get fixed because it still does not look right in places.

It's looking really good Beelze... can really see the likeness comming through, the hair looks really good, and pointers on sculpting it?

beelzeboss
12-07-2009, 04:51 PM
The hair is fairly simple really I start by using the knife tool with a large brush size at a lower division to push out the overall forms and flow of the hair holding ctrl keeping it really rough.
I move up a level or 2 and just do a really quick pass with the wax brush just to smooth it a little then work into it with the knife tool again. It is still very rough and needs more attention
Ideally I should have used a separate mesh for the hair so I could get it to a higher division level but I just wanted to try sticking with one mesh.

beelzeboss
12-08-2009, 05:04 AM
not a great deal of time tonight but I have done some more tweaking to this. Also grabbed a few more angles it may help with spotting issues.

Thanks it still needs a lot of work to get the likeness nailed unfortunately I was doing this while trying out the 2010 demo which has expired. I may be upgrading to 2010 in the new year if I can afford it so for now it is on hold. I have a personal game project I need to find more time to work on so I will be putting more time into that when I am not at the day job.

Happy new year everyone. I finally started to work on my personal project yesterday.
Currently I am concepting one of the alien classes. At the moment I am still working with a low division to flush out the proportions on it. The final version will be clothed but I want to roughly work out exactly how this character will look head to toe before I start designing the uniform and weapons.
