Little doodle I started earlier that I liked and decided to flesh out somewhat. Since I kinda lurk here a bit I thought I'd post some of my work, and get some feedback on it before I move on to texturing and rendering it out. Anyway, enjoy.

This has potential. Some personal suggestions though.

I would look at defining some of the skeletal forms in the head this will help it hold up currently you have some deep cuts in this which would be passing through bone it doesn't look right to me

I would look at defining some muscle whether it be visible where the skin has torn away or just under the skin you could make the face look quite gaunt so there is little fat in it which will help with the zombie look. A good ref for this would be Christian Bale in the Machinest he has barely any body fat it this and could almost pass for a convincing zombie.

I would look at defining some of the details a little more at the moment it all looks a little lumpy and vague it kind of confuses the eyes. Well for me anyway.
Don't have lumps for the sake of lumps give them a reason has he been burnt with acid, Is it from radiation has he been savaged by a dog this will all help the viewer identify with the zombie and help you with doing the details as you can get reference for the type of wound.

hope this helps to get you started the main thing is to get it looking like a convincing human then Zombie it up from there it will really help instead of trying to work in the human look and the zombie details at the same time.

keep posting updates.

Thanks for the input. As for the eyes (or should I say eye?), immediately after posting this, I went back and tweaked 'em. Looked like a rather unmarked region to me and this guy doesn't really look like he should have much pristine skin at all.

For the cuts, I could probably just run the fill brush through them and see if this gives any feeling of bone. I don't know, I'll see how it looks and decide whether I like it. The muscles are really missing in a lot of places since I wasn't really taking the sculpt seriously at first, then really liked where it was going as I messed around :(.

Always good to look back on something after a few hours. The back of the mesh leaves a lot to be desired. I'll come back to it sometime tomorrow.

Okie dokie, made a few revisions to it. I tried to build in a feel of bone in the cuts around the jaw line, and even threw a few teeth in there although they don't really stand up to close scrutiny. I think a lot of that detail will have to go into texturing, and most of it will probably end up hidden through shadow and AO.

I also worked over the shoulder blades and back area, but I think I'm gonna take another shot at it later. Not quite happy with it yet. I tried to define some of the muscles a bit more but I think that's pretty much done with. Working underneath the detail in such an asymetrical way makes my head hurt.

Anyway, I'll probably move onto texturing tonight, and post an update tomorrow morning. Thanks again for any feedback. :)

EDIT: Just realized I forgot to re-do the skin texturing in the areas I worked on. Fixed it here, but it's still missing the in images. Just an fyi. :)

Been gone for a few days, but I got some texturing done. Here's the mudbox screenshots. I tried rendering it out with mental ray in Maya, but it never comes out looking just right. Oh well. Anyway, feedback is, as always, much appreciated.
