I wonder if the updated version will work more smoothly on my laptop. I'll have to check it this weekend. I hope it does, i want to do some sculpting over my Christmas break.

The original release of 2010 has a small but significant pause at the end of every stroke on any model above subdivision level 2, which makes it all but impossible to work with. the annoying thing is 2009 was fine on the same machine up to about 8million polys, but this kicks in at about 120,000 polys. I want to use 2010 since the flat shading works.

There's no mention of any fix for this sort of thing and I didn't get much of a response when I reported it so I assume it's not a general problem, but it does make my subscription a bit of a waste of money.

As an aside I discovered when trying to resolce this, that there's no backward compatibility between mud files from 2010 to 2009. Why? I can't think of any feature differences that would affect the model data. If that worked, then I could sculpt in 2010 upto subd level 2 where flat shading is more important, then switch back to 2009 when the lag starts to happen. But I can't as I'd have to save the model out to obj and lose the lower subd levels.

Which is all very frustrating.

very disappointing, no mention of fixes for any of the numerous .FBX bugs between Mud/Max.
i suppose i'll stick with good(very) old .OBJ for another year until we see the next SP or slightly updated version of Mud.

There are a few important differnces code wise that make that impossible, but the largest one is the existance of the SDK as 2009 has no cncept of it as it didnt have one. So the code that was added to make this possible changes the structure of the mud file and the way it is produced and loaded back in. Thats why there is no compatibility betwee mud 2k9 and mud 2k10

I'm not sure I see why that would be the case. But fair enough. Hopefully the dev team appreciate that this is undesirable and avoid it next version.

Anyway I installed the SP (terrible method of updating by having to uninstall the original and delete your custom settings by the way). And as expected, absolutely no difference to my problem. Hit subdivision level 3 and there's a half second pause at the end of every stroke.

So it looks like I won't be using Mud 2010 over the Christmas period.
