Well here it is, the first chance I've had time for a complex personal project in over 3 years. 'The Dentist'.

I've always had a phobia of dentists and needles (especially when combined) so on the train back for a gig at cartoon network I draw a concept to try and conquer that phobia for once and for all. The motivation is that my kids are now at the age where they need a trip to a dentist, and the last thing they want is daddy passing out cold lol. So I decided to embody my phobia into a sculpt.

It's all sculpted by hand with no special stencils, stamps or tricks in Mudbox from low res base meshes using a default setup. Only the goggles and scuba tank setup are poly models. The final poly count is just a shade under 20 million split across 18 sub models. The detail on thsi is so heavy that even a 4k shot has trouble capturing it all....

It also will be out as my next DVD once I have a small nervous breakdown to get rid of all those hard surface shapes out of my head lol.

So yes you can do hard surface stuff in mudbox......

After modelling a hideously complex valve system for the tanks...3d max crashed...no recovery..nothing..hours lost. So Marvin Washington (@wdcstudios on twitter) bailed me out and made the one you see on the image above...thanks dude.

W-O-W! This is awesome and terrifying and awesome again!

*shudder* I have to wear heard phones to drown out the drill sound. I hope it goes over well for your kiddos when they have their first visits!

Utterly amazing Wayne :D!!!

Nice work wayne, thats some intense sculpting.!
can't wait to watch the vids, i have to pay my internet bill first, reached my download limit. ( using the old mans at the moment )

I don't mind the dentist, i actually get bored, i close my eyes and think i wish he would hurry up cause im sick of sitting in the chair.. don't mind the drills but when he gets the hook out and starts yankin stuff.. not a fan of that. lol

The hard surface detailing is fantastic. Kinda reminds me of Gyver.

Trust me dude the inside of my head and thought processes its not a nice place to visit....

But the nbasic idea is it is the embodyment of my fears, every hole is meant to contain a needle or peice of dental equipment, meaning in this case the dentists is in more pai than his patients. The difference is he LIKES the pain, hence the gas mask containing the nitrous oxide. The fleshy parts of his body look the way they do because the pain he causes others decays his own being. thats sort of a very edited highlights of it.....

Wouldn't I be as creepy as him if I wanted to search through the inside of your head ;)?

That is actually quite a horrific back story... Cool deal!

PS: Did you come up with that now or before you started out? :p

Hehe

Happy user.

Btw: Even though I know it is all good with trying to keep regular subscriptions I still think it is a bit wrong to have time restricted videos...
Take me as an example, I haven't had the time yet to watch all 3 vids (of this new thingy) due to a lot of things I have right now. But I still want to see them, asap (!).

wow, im not letting him in to my mouth :P

really nice job wayne.
The base mesh was clean and flat, so must have bin a bunch of sculpting on this fella :)

about the "knobs." if you understand what i mean with that, the dots around his boddy with hole in them. they kinda reminds me of the shells grown on sea rocks :P

Hope to see more great sculpts in the future to from you :)
