Did a little Vector Displacement Map test using the beta of Mudbox 2011, it is so cool to be able to just paint geometry onto another surface like this.

I started by making this geometric shape in mudbox into a brush...

And here’s the resulting vdm brush

I then started with a fresh sphere, and stamped this vdm all over it. I then used the "Fill" brush to place the more noisy detail on the surface of the sphere without affecting the bubbles. That was using a custom stamp using the reaction diffusion KPT filter in photoshop.

Then exported the result to 3dsmax (The full highres mesh, since neither brazil nor mentalray in max have a good way to use VDM displacing yet). Added the microscope shader, which includes a small bump map, and rendered in Brazil, slight tweaking and compositing in photoshop.

Neil works at Pixar...(or is it disney pixar officially now Neil?) Neil has been a regular mudbox beta tester for quite a while :)

This image is a very good way to demo vector displacement in action..I think neil will agreee it opens up a whole new world....

Wicked.. great to see mudbox getting used in the major companies.. Can' wait to get my grubby little hands on the new release.. Mudbox has totally changed the way i model and think, i absolutely love it.. Such a powerful program..

Can't wait to see some beta images people do..
thanks for sharing that Neil..

I have the sudden urge to sneeze ;)

Keekkek I keed! I have to admit I don't think I can appreciate the coolness of the new tools, since I'm still learning. These images do look very interesting!

Thanks guys, glad you dig the image. The VDM feature is really, really cool, I've played with doing hacky things to achieve the effect in max for years, so nice to finally have a better authoring tool to achieve these sorts of effects.

Cool image but you are saying somthing.

how long will it take before mental ray get out there launching vector displacement compatibility you think?

anyway until then i guess we need to do workarounds like retopo and like you , just import the whole thing :)

Remember that neil works for pixar...and so he has lots of experience of renderman ..which does support it.

No idea. Mentalray itself can do VDM, but it's not available in the maya or max versions. So if you want to see that compatibility, make sure to mention it to autodesk, that's the only way they'll put time into the feature.

Yep I was asked to write teh vector disp shaders for th 3 big apps as someone was on leave. Only to find after spending weeks on a easy to use shader that mental ray has a massive bug regarding applying vector displacement for a custom shader. lets just say I was a little mad at the wasted time.

Does this vector displacement (for 3ds max ) just work when i apply a sss shader to a a model and add into displace slot that shade?. Because i tryed with a A&D materials for mental ray but then i don't have a wayne vector displace shader in the shader list ?

Can somebody tell my why's that happening ?

Because mental ray can be n idiot at times lol....

try typing in the search field the 1st part the name. Yes it does work with the skin shaders in fact I use it in all of my articles for 3 creative magazine thats out now.
