My Pre Production render before hand over for rigging

I worked on a shed load of models for this tv advert for the open university here in england. It should be getting a lot of tv play over the months. The blue whale was probaby the most challenging of them all as because it was for a university it had to be anatomically perfect. I fast becomae a bloody blue whale expert! (I'll be upping a video on how this was developed on the on demand stream soon.) As soon as I have clerance to , I'll show some of the models and wip shots.

Enjoy

wow nice, Wayne do you just use mudbox for all your models?

mudbox in combo with either max or silo with some topogun and uvlayout where required. Although it depends on the pipeline. But I've yet to have a job that couldnt be sculpted in mudbox.

so for say like that whale, you did the bease mesh in silo and then scupted it in mudbox?. For full body stuff i guess its use a 3d package for the base mesh and thenmudbox or zbrush for the other stuff. But if its just a a skull you can model it all in mudbox?.

Wow man, that whale looks amazing !! brilliant work on it.. Ad looks good to..
So were u responsible for ALL the models in the add? cause there was a crap load of models in that thing lol..

@Mittin
Waynes good enough to start anything he wants in mudbox from scratch, having a program like Topogun allows an artist to do just that and then go into that program and retopologise the mesh. but that said yes ppl still use major 3d app likes max maya etc, to make base meshes and then take it into a sculpting program.. i prefer to do it that way, i like a lot of control over my base meshes.. but thats just me, im sure i'll change one day when i get better.

comes down to what workflow u prefer.

The whale base mesh on this occasion was done in 3dmax, then sent to mud , then back to max for text renders etc... How you work depends on what works best for you for the model your doing. But its always goingto be essential to know a main 3d app well for use with any sculpting app. Even if someone invented a psychic brain interface for sculpting, it wouldn't change major pipelines as they are established and they dont change often.

"There be Whales here Cap'n!" Beautiful whale Wayne :) I love your creatures, though I like seeing work of this nature too! Skillz!

Old Bluey turned into a favorite of mine as the research needed for this was very in depth. If there was a pub quiz on blue whales I'd probably win it lol.

Wayne, please can you tell me what is the polycount of sub-D level for added displacement map for this whale model.
..and can you tell me what is beside experience best way to measure&define polycount for movie models, for example if this whale should be in screen shoot that you posted.
Is it possible to sub divide just a particular selected region?
Thanx for the ''HUB''

The polycount for this was just a shade under 2 million. 4k diffuse, spec, gloss and bump maps as well as 4 k 32 bit displacement.

The rule is take the closest point your model wil be seen on scren and times that screen resolution by 2. As initially this was to be shown in HD I went for 4k maps.

As an answer to your selected subdivision question: No this is not possible in the newer versions of mudbox. I know it was available on the earliest but not any longer as it created a lot of problems...
